SitecoreAI Page Builder Bug – Duplicate Page Branches in Insert Options

I recently came across an interesting issue in SitecoreAI Page Builder where Insert Options were not behaving as expected.

The problem was quite simple to reproduce from the editor's point of view, but the underlying behavior was confusing.

The Problem

We had Page Branches configured as insert options for a page. When opening the page in Page Builder and checking the available insert options, the same Page Branch templates were appearing multiple times.

In other words, instead of seeing something like:

  • Branch Template A
  • Branch Template B
  • Branch Template C

the Page Builder insert menu could show the same branch template more than once.

This was particularly confusing because the configuration itself did not appear to contain duplicate entries.

Initial Investigation

One of the first things I wanted to establish was whether this was simply a Page Builder UI issue or whether the duplication was already present in the data returned by Sitecore.

Sitecore's Pages API provides an endpoint for retrieving the insert options for a page:

GET /api/v1/pages/{pageId}/insertoptions

Checking the effective insert options is useful because it helps distinguish between two possible scenarios:

  1. The API is already returning duplicate insert options.
  2. The API returns the correct options but Page Builder displays them multiple times.

There are also a few things worth checking during troubleshooting:

  • Page-level insert options
  • Template-level insert options
  • Insert option relationships such as Parent of and Child of
  • Page Branches rules
  • Any custom insert option rules or pipeline processors

Another interesting point is that insert options operate at the site collection level. Therefore, when templates are shared across multiple sites in the same site collection, configuration from different site contexts can also become relevant.

Page Branches

The issue becomes particularly interesting when SXA Page Branches are involved.

Page Branches can be added to insert options using the rule:

Add the specified Page Branch to insert options

During the investigation, Sitecore Support also pointed out that Page Branches can produce problems when their rule configuration is inconsistent. For example, a Page Branches folder item can have its rules cleared while the underlying Rule field still contains a value such as:

<ruleset />

That is worth checking if you see errors related to GetMasters or PageBranches in the Sitecore logs.

But in This Case It Was a Sitecore Bug

After investigation, Sitecore Support was able to reproduce the behavior on a clean SitecoreAI instance.

That was the important part of the investigation.

It meant that the duplicate Page Branches were not simply caused by our particular implementation or configuration.

Sitecore confirmed that the behavior was not expected and registered it as a product bug.

Bug Reference

The Sitecore Support bug reference for this issue is:

PGS-6758

At the time of the support response, Sitecore confirmed that there was no immediate fix or workaround available and that the issue would be considered for a future product release.

What I Would Check If You See This Issue

If you are seeing duplicate Page Branches in the Page Builder Insert Options menu, I would check the following before assuming that the product has a bug:

  1. Check the effective insert options.
Use the Pages API and see whether duplicates are already present in the response.
  2. Check page-level insert options.
Open the page settings and compare the page insert options with the template insert options.
  3. Try restoring the page insert options.
If page-level options have been customized, restore them to the template-level configuration and test again.
  4. Check template insert options.
Pay particular attention to shared templates and the site collection scope.
  5. Check Page Branch rules.
If you are using the Add the specified Page Branch to insert options rule, check the Page Branch configuration and Sitecore logs.
  6. Check for custom insert option processors.
If you have customizations that manipulate effective insert options, make sure the same branch isn't being added more than once.

Conclusion

This was a good example of why it is important to distinguish between a configuration problem and a product issue when troubleshooting Sitecore.

There are several legitimate ways that effective insert options can be affected, particularly when templates, site collections and Page Branches are involved. However, in this particular case, Sitecore was able to reproduce the duplicate Page Branch behavior on a clean SitecoreAI environment and confirmed it as a product bug.

If you encounter the same behavior, the relevant Sitecore Support reference is PGS-6758.

I will update this post if a future SitecoreAI release provides a fix or a documented workaround.

Sitecore PowerShell Script to create all language versions for an item from en version

We have lots of media items and our business wants to copy the data from en version of media item to all other language versions defined in System/Languages. This ensures that media is available in all the languages. So, we created the below powershell script to achieve the same -  #Get all language versions defined in System/Languages $languages = Get-ChildItem /sitecore/System/Languages -recurse | Select $_.name | Where-Object {$_.name -ne "en"} | Select Name #Ensuring correct items are updated by comparing the template ID  $items = Get-ChildItem -Path "/sitecore/media library/MyProjects" -Recurse | Where-Object {'<media item template id>' -contains $_.TemplateID} #Bulk update context to improve performance New-UsingBlock (New-Object Sitecore.Data.BulkUpdateContext) { foreach($item in $items){    foreach($language in $languages){ $languageVersion = Get-Item -Path $item.Paths.Path -Language $language.Name #Check if language versi...

Export Sitecore media library files to zip using SPE

If you ever require to export Sitecore media files to zip (may be to optimize them), SPE (Sitecore Powershell Extension) has probably the easiest way to do this for you. It's as easy as the below 3 steps -  1. Right click on your folder (icons folder in snap)>Click on Scripts> Click on Download 2. SPE will start zipping all the media files placed within this folder. 3. Once zipping is done, you will see the Download option in the next screen. Click Download Zip containing the media files within is available on your local machine. You can play around with the images now. Hope this helps!! Like and Share ;)

Make Sitecore instance faster using Roslyn Compiler

When we install the Sitecore instance on local, the first load is slow. After each code deploy also, it takes a while for the Sitecore instance to load and experience editor to come up. For us, the load time for Sitecore instance on local machines was around 4 minutes. We started looking for ways to minimize it and found that if we update our Web.config to use Roslyn compiler and include the relevant Nugets into the project, our load times will improve. We followed the simple steps - Go to the Project you wish to add the NuGet package and right click the project and click 'Manage NuGet Packages'. Make sure your 'Package Source' is set to nuget.org and go to the 'Browse' Tab and search Microsoft.CodeDom.Providers.DotNetCompilerPlatform. Install whichever version you desire, make sure you note which version you installed. You can learn more about it  here . After installation, deploy your project, make sure the Microsoft.CodeDom.Providers.DotNetCompilerPlatform.d...

Experience of a first time Sitecore MVP

The Journey I have been working in Sitecore for almost 10 years now. When I was a beginner in Sitecore, I was highly impressed by the incredible community support. In fact, my initial Sitecore learning path was entirely based on community written blogs on Sitecore. During a discussion with my then technology lead Neeraj Gulia , he proposed the idea that I should start giving back to developer community whenever I get chance. Just like I have been helped by many developers via online blogs, stackoverflow etc., I should also try to help others. Fast forward a few years and I met  Nehemiah Jeyakumar  (now an MVP). He had a big archive of his technical notes in the form Sitecore blogs. I realized my first blog dont have to be perfect and it can be as simple as notes to a specific problem for reference in future. That's when I probably created my first blog post on Sitecore. At that time, I didn't knew about the Sitecore MVP program. Over the years, I gained more confidence to writ...

Clean Coding Principles in CSharp

A code shall be easy to read and understand. In this post, I am outlining basic principles  about clean coding after researching through expert recommended books, trainings and based on my experience. A common example to start with is a variable declaration like - int i  The above statement did not clarify the purpose of variable i. However,  the same variable can be declared as -  int pageNumber The moment we declared the variable as int pageNumber, our brain realized that the variable is going to store the value for number of pages. We have set the context in our brain now and it is ready to understand what the code is going to do next with these page numbers. This is one of the basic advantages of clean coding. Reasons for clean coding -  • Reading clean code is easier - Every code is revisited after certain amount of time either by the same or different developer who created it. In both the cases, if the code is unclean, its difficult to understand and u...
